Our Guide to Campsite Toilets and Showers

Hello all,
We would like to share our experiences of campsite facilities so far.
The first thing to remember about camping is that most people do not really care what they wear. Camping is mostly about being practical. You can walk across the campsite in bright pink PJ’s a dressing gown and wellies and it is quite acceptable!
Some items are more practical than others especially when venturing to the shower block. We do laugh at how many people use the Aldi bags to put everything in. We sometimes do that too! From our observations it is ladies who take more items with them. Men can stroll across the site with a towel flung over their backs.
When you must take two towels with you – one for the head and one for the body then you do need a larger bag. So, when you get to the shower block the floor instantly becomes lava (if you are familiar with that kid’s game) no matter how clean the floor is no part of your body or attire must touch it! That is the law!
For this reason, the chosen footwear for showering must be crocs or flip flops. Having the bare feet touch the shower tray would be devastating! If this happens then naturally, one must clean the bottom of the foot so for this manoeuvre the stork position comes into play. Standing on the one leg whilst the other one is up in the air so you can clean the bottom of your foot. This would usually require touching the wall to hold yourself up, so immediately that hand must be cleaned again!
Personally, we prefer the campsites where there are separate bathrooms, so you can do everything all in one go with privacy. These have a basin, a toilet, and a shower all within a lockable room. We have not found these in many places, but us of our favourite types.
We have also found so far that there is no connection between the prices of sites and the cleanliness of facilities. In fact, some of the most expensive sites have ended up being the worst kept shower blocks This is not always the case, but it is always best to fully read the reviews on campsites, the more recent the better. We have stayed on two campsites where we have been very disappointed by how clean the toilets and showers are. Showering with daddy long legs and other hideous insects dangling around on cobwebs is something we would not like to repeat. For us we would not return to the site, but we have always said if we had shower facilities in our campervan then this would not matter quite so much. When we review campsites, we do try to walk around the facilities as well on our videos.

Something else to think about is shaver points, electric sockets and hairdryers. We have found that sometimes the showers and amenities sometimes carry extra charges, sometimes you would need coins or tokens. You can always email the campsite if this is not clear on the website.
When travelling in a small van, everything needs to be compact, so we have have found our washbags ideal for this purpose and great for going into the shower blocks.
