How To Find The Right Campsite For You
Are you planning a camping trip but unsure where to start?
With so many different types of campsites available, finding the ideal location can be overwhelming. In this guide, we’ll explore the various options to help you choose the perfect campsite for your next outdoor adventure.
With anything, you usually get what you pay for, having said that we have visited a few sites where this has not been the case!
It is worth noting, that not all campsites are open all year round.
Quite a few of them tend to open around spring and close around September, but this can vary.
Each site is different but generally made of of the types of pitches below:
- Fully Grassed pitch
- Hard Standing pitch
- Fully serviced pitches
- Glamping pitches
Fully Grassed pitches feel more natural but after a lot of rain they can be prone to flooding, It doesn’t take long with a lot of use that pitches can become boggy. All types of vehicles can get stuck in the mud and we have seen a few motorhomes and caravans having to be towed out. From what we have read, and people we have spoke to not all insurances cover this misfortune! Generally the site owners will watch the weather forecast and if it can be avoided the will not let the plots or areas of ground that have this problem.
Hard standing pitches are usually made from smooth concrete or gravel would not be suitable for tents, with this type of camping pitch we have discovered it is nearly impossible to peg down any awnings, tents or windbreaks. You can purchase stronger tent pegs for this purpose but we have not found it very successful.
Quite a few campsites have hard standing pitches with grass at the side so you can park the vehicle on the hardstanding and put the awning on the grass. Usually the site have rules about which way the campervan or caravan needs to face, and this is usually for maximum privacy from other campsite users.
When we have camped on hardstanding pitches, we prefer the hard concrete rather than the hardcore pebbles or stones that is sometimes there. Not only are the pebbles quite dusty and dirty, but we have found it is painful when you stand on kneel on it, whatever flooring you have in your awning.
Fully Serviced pitches can be hard standing or grass based, and these are where you get your own personal cold water tap and also an electric hook up point.
Glamping
If you’re looking for a more luxurious camping experience, glamping is the way to go.
Glamping pods are usually small huts or cabins with heating, electric and at least a comfortable bed inside. They vary in prices and we have not stayed in one so cannot comment on the comfort or value of this type of camping.
We always think if you have a family member who would like to come on the trip but wouldn’t like traditional camping then this could be a good compromise.
Toilet and Shower Facilities
Personally this is one of the most important things for us, and not all campsites do have toilets and showers. Sometimes you do have to pay extra for the showers and this information will be available from the campsite.
Be sure to look at the latest information and reviews about each site. See our links at the bottom of the page.
Campsites with Activities
For families or groups seeking a more active camping experience, campgrounds with activities may be the perfect choice. These campgrounds often offer:
- Swimming pools
- Playgrounds
- Hiking trails
- Fishing ponds
- Sports facilities
- Funfairs and amusements.
Choosing the Right Campsite
When selecting a campsite, consider your preferences and needs.
Think about factors such as:
- Desired level of comfort
- Activities you want to participate in
- Budget
- Location
- Amenities
By carefully considering these factors, you can find the perfect campsite to create unforgettable memories.
Here are some great websites and apps to help you find a campsite, you can easily see what is available and also see reviews from other users.
