Our visit to Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door in Dorset
Lulworth Cove & Durdle Door in Dorset – A Perfect Coastal Getaway
In August 2023 we embarked on a day trip to the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to visit the iconic Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door.
If you’re looking for breathtaking scenery, a touch of history, and a healthy dose of fresh air, this is the perfect getaway. We would recommend.
Lulworth Cove: Nature’s Masterpiece.
Our first stop was Lulworth Cove, a stunning horseshoe-shaped bay with clear turquoise waters and dramatic cliffs. It’s a truly remarkable sight, and it’s easy to see why it’s such a popular spot for visitors. We spent some time exploring the cove, taking in the views, making a video and snapping photos. There are plenty of places to sit and relax, and the beach is perfect for a leisurely stroll. Unfortunately the weather was not great and we got soaked! So we naturally had to head for the pub to get a cup of tea and some fish and chips. Our plan was to have a picnic near our campervan but the weather changed our minds!
Durdle Door: An Iconic Landmark.
Next, we made our way to Durdle Door, a natural limestone arch that juts out into the sea. It’s an impressive sight, and it’s well worth the walk from Lulworth Cove. The path winds its way along the cliffs, offering stunning views of the coastline. Once you reach Durdle Door, you can admire it from the beach or climb up the steps to get a closer look. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes, as the path can be uneven in places. It really is a steep hill up to it, and on the day we went down the steps they were very muddy and slippery. We were lucky we had not got the dog with us on that day!
Tips for Visiting:
- Parking: There are car parks at both Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, but they can get busy, especially during peak season. Arrive early to secure a spot.
- Footwear: Wear comfortable walking shoes, as there’s a fair bit of walking involved, especially if you plan on visiting both Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door.
- Weather: The weather on the coast can be unpredictable, so be sure to check the forecast before you go and dress accordingly. Bring layers, as it can get chilly even on sunny days.
- Food & Drink: There are cafes and restaurants at both Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, which looked really nice, we had fish and chips whilst sheltering from the rain! Consider bringing a picnic lunch to enjoy on the beach if you are on a budget.
- Respect the Environment: The Jurassic Coast is a fragile ecosystem, so please be mindful of your impact. Stick to designated paths, take your litter home with you, and avoid disturbing wildlife.
Our trip to Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door was a fantastic experience. The scenery is simply breathtaking, and there’s plenty to see and do. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing day out or an adventurous hike, this is the perfect place to visit. We can’t wait to go back, hopefully when the weather is a bit better!
